While the College of Cardinals gathers in the Vatican’s Synod Hall for daily consultations in the General Congregations, a short distance away, work is intensifying to prepare the Sistine Chapel for Conclave. The two stoves for the burning of ballots are being installed, one of which will produced the unmistakable smoke, black, if the vote is inconclusive, white, if St. Peter’s successor has been chosen. The second stove will serve to burn the ballots. The raised platform is also being completes, it will protect the ancient floor and ensure the benches for the cardinal electors are all on the same level.
