On Friday Pope Francis celebrated the Passion and Death of Our Lord in St. peter’s Basilica. The Eucharist is not celebrated on Good Friday. The Cross dominated the entire celebration. The story of the Passion was chanted by three deacons and enriched by the Sistine Chapel Choir. Preacher of the Papal Household, Father Raniero Cantalamessa OFM Cap, gave the sermon focusing on the significance of the Year of Faith and the need to evangelize the world in a joyful and open way. A penitential atmosphere of recollection dominated the Vatican Basilica. Lights were dimmed as a sign of the spirit of the celebration, which began and ended in total silence.
