First saints canonized by Pope Francis

Being generous, witnessing, not living the faith alone. That was the message of the saints proclaimed today, as summed up by Pope Francis in the homily for the solemn canonization ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square, in front of thousands of faithful, including official delegations from many countries. The 800 martyrs of Otranto, after they had survived the Ottoman invasion and siege of their city, were beheaded for refusing to renounce their faith, and died confessing the risen Christ. While we venerate the martyrs of Otranto, the Pope said, we ask God to sustain the many Christians who still suffer from violence, and to give them the courage and fidelity to respond to evil with good.
